It’s a cool (for Florida standards) New Year’s Day morning in 1971 as this “aircheck” exists of what’s playing on WCWR 1470 AM out of Dunedin, serving the Tampa Bay area.
Currently a Spanish language talk station, the 1470 frequency has gone through numerous changes in format and call letters over the years. At the dawn of 1971, it was playing pop music in what was known back then as the “Boss Radio” format, where station promotional jingles were kept short, DJ chatting was kept to a minimum, as was commercials. It was a popular format across the land, with stations such as CKLW (Golden!) in Detroit and KHJ out of Los Angeles leading the way.
It’s a neat little format. I wonder, if you update the jingles to something catchy for 2015 standards, would it work today with today’s pop hits? Maybe, maybe not.
