I’m not ashamed to admit that one of my heroes is not a human being, but a gorilla named Koko.
According to Wikipedia, Koko is older than me by two months and two days. She is not just your ordinary animal, either: she understands and can use sign language.
I’ve probably mentioned before that I find it very interesting how technically advanced our society is in some ways, but not in others. We have (or should I say “had”) the ability to put men on the surface on the moon, but yet I can’t communicate with my pet cat Harry beyond certain gestures, and likewise he can only meow and gesture at me.
When I see and a gorilla and a human being communicating, as Koko does with her keeper, it gives me hope that there will be a day when humans and pets will understand each other better, and that won’t be a bad day.
