As the world knows by now, there was a huge upset in the land of the UFC on a fight card held in Australia Saturday night our time.
The seemingly invincible Ronda Rousey proved to the world that like all of us, she is a mere mortal. Holly Holm, who came in to the fight undefeated in 10 MMA bouts, slayed the dragon with a swift kick in the head in the first minute of the second round of their bout.
I’ve seen the story too many times to believe someone is that good in the ring, whether it be boxing or in MMA, where there are a lot more ways to get beat. Joe Frazier seemed unstoppable in the early 1970’s until a fighter named George Foreman knocked him down six times within two rounds. Mike Tyson seemed likewise, until Buster Douglas shocked the world at the Tokyo Dome in 1990. Riddick Bowe looked like another unstoppable force until he fought Evander Holyfield a second time, losing by decision.
So Ronda Rousey losing? Nope, didn’t surprise me THAT much. Every good fighter has a fighter out there who is their kyrptonite, whether you’re the baddest boxer out there, or the champ of the third grade in the schoolyard. Stay humble at all times.
