More Than Just A Shining Moment

It was one of the longest winning streaks in collegiate sports history. But after 111 straight wins, the UConn lady hoopsters finally met defeat last Friday in Dallas.

Mississippi State defeated UConn 66-64 in overtime on a shot going in the basket just after time had expired, in what will likely go down as one of the great buzzer beaters in women’s hoops history.

But it wasn’t the Lady Bulldogs who claimed the NCAA crown in women’s basketball. It was South Carolina, who decisively defeated MSU in Dallas. Good work to both teams, and to coach Dawn Staley, finally getting the championship that eluded her as a player.

On the men’s side, North Carolina took the crown last night beating Gonzaga 71-65. Looked to me like they got help from the officiating crew, who called a tight game most of the way which favored the play of UNC.

As for the contest I was in, I hit a roadblock when both finalists won Saturday but failed to cover the point spread. Oh well.
